Fall is Coming

Fall at Fox and Rook

Summer may be in full swing, but Fall is coming. In fact, it’s already making its way into the shop. Long sleeves, maxi dresses, warm coats, and of course… some party dresses, just in case! It’s never too early to start thinking about holiday dresses. ;)

Things are looking a little bit bare right now, but I have so much more to list over the coming weeks. Whee!

Love it // Econica Cashmere Lingerie

Econica Cashmere Bralette & PantiesOh la la! I’ve been admiring these adorable underthings from Canadian designer Econica. Owner/designer Natallia uses natural, organic and eco-friendly materials to create her garments and accessories. I’m especially fond of her cute bralettes and undies. In these chilly winter months, I know I’d feel that much warmer with these adorable cashmere pieces on. I love the two-tone fabrics, and you know how comfy these are just by looking at them. Add to my 2014 resolutions manifesto: invest in some cute and luxurious underthings, and never look back.

Love it // Plümo Woodland Socks

Standard

Plümo Woodland SocksSeveral years ago, I made a deal with myself that I would stop wearing whimsical socks. I’m not even sure how things got to a point where a self-intervention was needed, but it was getting a little bit embarrassing. I had all kinds of exciting (read: totally lame) socks. Socks with cats, unicorns, gingerbread men… Harry Potter socks, rainbow stripes, and socks with bobbles on the ankles. I’m actually blushing as I type this. Nightmare on Sock Street!

So for many years now, I’ve relegated myself to the plain and simple sock set up. Everything matches, it’s simple, it’s minimalist… ahhh. In fact, this has been my way of life for so long, that I almost forgot about my humiliating past! It wasn’t until I stumbled across these cute Woodland Socks from Plümo, that I unleashed some sort of inner fun-sock-lust that has been buried for nearly a decade.

But… but… these are practical socks! They’re wool, which is perfect because my poor little feet are always freezing. Oh, and another thing, they have foxes and crows on them, and a crow is almost a rook. Everyone knows you need to have whimsical socks that match your business name. It’s simply how it’s done! Isn’t it? Besides, I’m just going to wear them around the house, and inside my wellies.

You see? I can justify wearing them on so many levels. Whew. That was close though.

Love it // Manitobah Mukluks Storyboots

Standard

Manitobah Mukluks StorybootsThe Storyboot Project by Manitobah Mukluks serves to help Aboriginal communities by providing income, as well as a means for the artisans to record and preserve their craft and traditions. The boots are limited editions, and there are a number of absolutely gorgeous styles to choose from. These particular boots were designed by Annie McKay, and they are just stunning.

We have a little Christmas tradition in our house. Every gets a new pair of slippers and pajamas on Christmas Eve. This year, I’m going to get moccasins from Manitobah Mukluks for everyone. The kids ones are especially cute, and I’m really happy to support Aboriginal-owned companies here in Canada.

Wear it // For Little Ladies

Wear it // For Little LadiesMy five year old, who is currently wearing multi-coloured leggings, a plaid skirt, a strawberry-print pajama shirt and mis-matched socks, helped me choose these charming pieces. It’s funny, because for a short spell, I really tried to get her to dress properly. You know, in seasonally appropriate, colour coordinated clothing. It didn’t take me long to realize that she is happier wearing what she likes, and if she’s happy, I’m happy.

Occasionally, I let out a wistful sigh when I see B’s little friends, neatly attired in hip-kid outfits, chic hair accessories and darling shoes. But really, if my kid wants to have hair like Ponyo’s dad, so be it. If she wants to tie scarves around her waist and pull her socks over her leggings, that’s okay too. She’s doing her own thing, and I hope she always does.

My kid loves fashion, and despite what it might look like, she is quite picky about her clothing. Her quirky ensembles are part of her magnificent character, and I certainly wouldn’t want to change that. These little ones only get to be kids for so long. Let them dress up and have fun while they still want to.

I am quite proud of little B’s curatorial assistance with the above selections. I really love Italian children’s wear designers Babe & Tess, and what’s not to love about the children’s lines done by two of my grown-up favourites: Chloé and Isabel Marant. My little one was particularly enamoured of the Scotch & Soda beaded collar, and the Zara boots, but made it very clear that she would like to ask for all of these items for Christmas. Good luck, kiddo.

Wear it // Black and Blue

I love the pairing of dark blue and black. There’s nothing like stepping out of your comfort zone, by adding a little bit of royal blue and navy to your otherwise black wardrobe. I mean, we wouldn’t want anyone to worry. Seriously though, I remember when it was un grand faux pas to mix navy and black, and now I simply can’t get enough!
