Fall is Coming

Fall at Fox and Rook

Summer may be in full swing, but Fall is coming. In fact, it’s already making its way into the shop. Long sleeves, maxi dresses, warm coats, and of course… some party dresses, just in case! It’s never too early to start thinking about holiday dresses. ;)

Things are looking a little bit bare right now, but I have so much more to list over the coming weeks. Whee!

Make it Work

Hello everyone! How have you been?

It has been a month with nary a word from me. Writing this blog is one of my favourite things, and yet I let it go for a while in order to catch my breath.

Every now and then, I get really tired. I mean, really tired. Sometimes it happens when I’ve been sick. Other times is happens when I’ve been through a stressful time. Occasionally it creeps up out of nowhere. Suddenly, I just feel compelled to rest a great deal. I can’t get enough sleep. All the usual solutions to fatigue, including exercise, supplements, hydration, healthier diet… they don’t help much. I just need to take it easy until my body is ready to get back to normal.

Of course, in the meantime, I don’t get as much work done. I don’t go out buying new stock for the shop. The housework falls behind. My relationships don’t get the attention they need. My devotion to creating delicious and healthful meals starts to slide. My personal projects fall by the wayside. Then I find myself sitting here, a month later, wondering how I’m going to catch up. The answer is always the same: one day at a time.

Those of you who struggle with chronic fatigue, depression, and other recurring, debilitating disorders might find this pattern quite familiar. It has taken me over a decade to accept myself the way I am, stop myself from overdoing it, and recognize when my energy is starting to wind down. I just have to step back a bit and do what I can.

That’s what I’ve been doing all month. Making it work, putting family first, and sleeping. Cough… a lot of sleeping.

All of that to say, sorry! I feel good, and I’m glad to be back at it. March is going to be totally awesome. Whee!

Much love,

We Are Go!

Fox and Rook shopWhee! My new shop is up and running. Everything works. I’m afraid it’s not as well stocked as I’d like yet, but there’s been no sun around here for weeks, and I much prefer natural light for photographs. Please have a look and let me know what you think!

My Etsy shop isn’t going anywhere, but I am so excited to branch out and expand. We’ve been working at really honing the aesthetic of the shop, and choosing pieces we love, rather than what might be a good selling item. What terrible business acumen, ha ha ha! Call me soft, but I believe that if I fall in love with something, there’s someone out there who will feel just as strongly as I do about it.

Now that things are rolling in that department, I can get back to spending more time here. Huzzah!

Happy Birthday Fox and Rook!

It's a Celebration! This week marks the first anniversary of the Fox and Rook shop. What a wonderful year it has been!

I have been buying and selling vintage clothing for years and years. I always had one (or more) additional jobs, and oftentimes over the years, the promise of a steady paycheque would take priority over the work I was really passionate about, and I’d put my own business on hold to focus on working for someone else.

When I started Fox and Rook, we had just been through a couple of very difficult years. I decided to put my heart and soul into doing what I love, and I am so glad I did. This past year has been one wonderful surprise after another. I have the most amazing customers, and have made so many great friendships. I’ve connected to some brilliant folks through this blog, and I can’t tell you how much you all have enriched my life!

I look forward to getting up each morning and working like crazy. I love buying, mending, cleaning, laundering, writing and every little bit of it! I’ve never been able to say that before.

To celebrate Fox and Rook’s first year, I have an exciting announcement. We are growing. (No, I’m not pregnant.) We have a new, bigger, better shop opening on the first of the new year. Our new shop will cater to men, women and kids, and will also sell items for the home. The new shop is all about vintage, found, handmade and limited run products. We are working with some amazing makers and artisans, and I’m super stoked to announce those collaborations as they launch throughout the new year.

Happy Birthday, Fox and Rook! Thank you to all of you for you support!
